In conversation with Maria Hitchins, also known as Ladysoundchat. Founder and facilitator of DancersofJamaica, an award-winning dance advocacy network that promotes all things dance connected to Jamaica, yaad and abroad. An adjunct lecturer in Popular Dance at the Edna Manley Visual and Performing Arts College, where she created the first and only accredited Dancehall dance courses available in the Caribbean. Maria shares her wealth of knowledge in dance education, the street vs the stage and uptown vs downtown. How does your socio-economic background impact on your dancing dreams?

“What happens to Dancehall dance, is that the bulk of it is just teaching and performance in the dance moves. Not a lot exist in terms of spaces where you can go to learn beyond the dance moves. What were the philosophies? The mood? The mindset? The environment? That created the dance moves. This is why it is important to have those certificates”
